From "I Cant" to "I Choose": Shifting Your Mindset to Move Forward

At some point, we've all said things like :

"I don't have time."

"I can't give up sugar."

"I'm just not disciplined."

"I have no willpower."

These statements come from a mindset of lack- focused on what's missing, what's hard, or what feels out of reach. They're rooted in disempowerment, keeping us stuck in a loop of frustration, guilt, or resignation.

But what id we made a subtle, powerful shift- from limitation to choice?

From Lack to Empowered Choice

When you say "I can't," you give your power away. When you say "I'll try, " that's better, but your leaving room for failure. It's uncommitted, and still disempowering. When you say "I choose," you take your power back. You're no longer a passive observer in your life- you became an active participant.

Here's how that shift might look:

  • "I don't have time to cook" becomes "I'm choosing to prioritize other things right now."

  • "I can't stop snacking at night" becomes "I'm working on understanding my cravings, so I can make choices that support my goals."

  • "I have no energy to exercise" becomes "I'm noticing how tired I feel and exploring ways to move in a way that feels good."

The language you use matters. It shapes how you feel and how you act.

Thinking Forward, Not Backward

Instead of focusing on what you're not doing or what hasn't worked in the past, begin asking:

  • "What do I want more of?"

  • "How can I support myself today?"

  • "What small step feels possible right now?"

Forward-thinking doesn't ignore challenges. It simply refuses to let them define you.

This Isn't About Perfection

Shifting your mindset isn't about getting it "right" every time- it's about becoming aware of your patterns and gently redirecting them.

Try this:

Next time you catch yourself saying "I can't" or "I have to," pause.

Ask yourself: "Is that true? Or is there a choice here?"

Even acknowledging that you could choose differently is a powerful step forward.
